As a new digital authoritarianism has taken hold amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a great necessity to re-invigorate human rights and civil liberties. Addressing this will be EngageMedia's key focus in 2022, through our various projects on digital rights, open and secure technology, and Video for Change.
Following the success of the first Video for Change Environmental Impact Lab, EngageMedia is excited to begin the final round of the Impact Lab with six new filmmakers, video collectives, and campaigners using film to tackle environmental issues and eager to explore how to maximise their respective film’s potential for social impact. 
To commemorate International Seed Day, Cinemata, Freedom Film Network, and the Malaysian Food Security and Sovereignty Forum have curated a video playlist of six films on seed saving and its connection to the farmers' struggles in Southeast Asia. The full playlist will be available for viewing from April 23 to 26, 2021. After this date, only select films will remain on Cinemata.
EngageMedia’s short documentary “Shooting COVID-19: Media Frontliners in Manila” has been chosen to be part of a special online screening at the 32nd Gawad Alternatibo film competition, a part of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival by the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP). The documentary is one of three films under the program, “Quarantimes Chronicles, Documentaries, and Film Essays”.

Despite this, video journalists like JL Burgos continue to take risks and pursue stories from marginalised communities to create films that call for a better society after the pandemic.
