Bangkok, Thailand: From November 28 to December 2, 2019, EngageMedia facilitated an intermediate-level video workshop for the Indigenous Voices in Asia Network (IVAN). Established by the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) in July 2013, IVAN is a platform for fostering solidarity and cooperation among indigenous and non-indigenous journalists in developing stories that depict the situation and aspirations of indigenous people.
“The topics were Storytelling for Advocacy, Design Principles, and Video & Editing Fundamentals”
The video workshop was a follow-up to a half-day mobile videography session that EngageMedia led last April 2019 in Chiangmai during IVAN’s regional gathering. Owing to the success of this session, EngageMedia and AIPP collaborated to design a more comprehensive video advocacy workshop. The topics included Storytelling for Advocacy, Design Principles, as well as Video and Editing Fundamentals.
12 participants from five countries took part in the workshop including representatives from Indigenous Media Network (Thailand), Conserve Indigenous Peoples Language Organization(Cambodia), PACOS TRUST (Malaysia), Jaringan Orang Asal Se Malaysia (Malaysia) and Indigenous Peoples’ Foundation for Education and Environment (Thailand).
Through this capacity building workshop, AIPP and EngageMedia hope that more videos about indigenous peoples’ culture, issues, and struggles will be produced in the coming months. AIPP is also gearing to organise a film festival this year.
The workshop was supported by The Foundation to Promote Open Society (FPOS) and the Swedish International Development Corporation Agency (SIDA).
